Company Bios

Andy Cates – President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Cates is an accomplished Executive with 28 years of experience in the offshore drilling and subsea equipment industry. Prior to forming The Subsea Company - Mr. Cates was Manager of Subsea Reliability for Transocean Offshore Drilling, during his tenure his responsibilities included acting as Country Manager, Operations Manager and World-Wide Drilling Manager. Mr. Cates direct duties at Transocean entailed setting up and shutting down foreign operations, overseeing large construction projects and running the day to day operations of deep-water drilling rigs and turnkey drilling operations. Subsea equipment reliability is of critical importance to efficient operations in deep-water and Mr. Cates has taken special interest in developing and implementing solutions for subsea reliability and efficiency issues throughout his career. He has a proven track record in building successful teams, operations, and in finding solutions to problems. At Transocean Offshore Drilling, Mr. Cates had direct authority for $1.5B of deep-water drilling assets.

Mr. Cates has broad energy industry experience ranging from managing large operations to creating, inspiring and transitioning entrepreneurial start-up teams. Mr. Cates career skills coupled with his ability to secure key team members will be the cornerstones for designing, building and leading a best-in-class subsea equipment company. During his career, Mr. Cates has obtained extensive experience in setting up operations, organizational design, executive management, budgeting, forecasting and problem solving, invaluable tools that will be utilized in building The Subsea Company.

Barry McMiles – Vice President of Design

Mr. McMiles is The Subsea Company’s Senior Design and Subsea Manager with 35 years of experience designing, operating, manufacturing and repairing subsea equipment. Mr. McMiles excels in developing innovative solutions to reliability issues and conceptualizing new ideas and approaches. His extensive knowledge and expertise dates back to the beginning of offshore drilling industry. Mr. McMiles is in a unique position to lead the Company’s engineering and design efforts in its quest to be the industries’ best-in-class subsea provider. Mr. McMiles has hands on experience in the operation, maintenance, trouble shooting and solving technical issues with virtually all major subsea equipment manufactures.

During his career, Mr. McMiles has designed, built and operated subsea controls, riser systems, tensioners, slip joints, drill-through equipment, blow-out-preventer stacks and subsea equipment handling systems. He has designed deep-water drilling rigs and their subsea systems, and has created solution to countless design problems in competitor’s products saving expensive equipment failures for his clients. The Company currently has several products in the patenting process.

Richard Davidson – Vice-President, Sales and Marketing

Mr. Davidson is an accomplished executive with over 40 years of military and commercial management experience. The last 20 years have been in the offshore drilling and subsea equipment industry. Prior to joining The Subsea Company - Mr. Davidson was Manager of Technical Sales for Drilling Controls, Inc., Manager of Technical Support for Hydril Company LP, Chief Engineer, Electrical and Software Systems, Hydril Company LP, President of Analog Logic Systems, Engineering Manager for JFL Communications, Inc., Senior VP and Chief Engineer, HBF Group, Inc., VP, Data Processing, American Owner Operators, Inc., and served in the US Army for many years.

Mr. Davidson has extensive experience in the design, construction and sales of deep water drilling control systems and BOP's. He has extensive experience in the design manufacture and operation of terrestrial and seaborne satellite communications systems. While at HBF Group, he developed the software and telephone switching systems for E 9-1-1 service for the Houston metropolitan area, and later for many other US and International locations.

Raquel Payan – Account Manager

Ms. Payan is a proficient Account/Business Development Manager and Marketing professional with experience in the Energy, Oil & Gas industry. Ms. Payan holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico State University and a design degree, with an emphasis in Architecture, from the Art Institute of Houston.

Prior to joining The Subsea Company, Ms. Payan was a Business Development Manager with Siemens Automation and Drives. Her overall responsibility was managing and directing Siemens Partners in the Mid-Atlantic, the most demanding territory. She accelerated growth, created best practices and service levels and developed numerous innovative marketing initiatives for the organization within the engineering software solutions market. Ms. Payan also managed and developed polypropylene resin business for Chevron Phillips, Chemical Company LP – producers of olefins, polypropylene & specialty chemicals. Ms. Payan extracted market information, pinpointed energy indicators affecting customer demand and implemented price realignment to maximize sales revenue. She also proactively addressed customer's challenges efficiently and effectively resulting in high customer satisfaction.

As a former business owner/general manager in the Architectural & Planning industry, Ms. Payan understands the value the service/sales process creates and she brings that value to The Subsea Company as well as its customers. That value, results in greater efficacy, reliability, reducing costs and minimizing environmental impact of both the company's and the customer's operation.
